What You Need To Know
This article is all about what you need to know as a beginner in making jewelry.
Therefore I will be sharing what I learnt in my 3years experience of making handmade bead jewelry.
1: GETTING READY
You need to ask yourself why are you getting into making jewelry in the first place? is it for hobby purposes or for selling purposes? once you have your answer decide the type of jewelry you want to make, is it the Antique, Bead, Handmade, Temple, Fashion,Bridal jewelry there are so many types of jewelry out there so do your research and only pick the type of jewelry that you are passionate about when it comes to making them.
If you are wondering Charity why make the jewelry that I’m passionate about ?listen there is always success when you do things you have passion for.If you are indecisive on the type to choose or not sure which jewelry type you have passion for try making random types and see which ones excite you and you would love to keep on making. Then you can now decide will you either make necklaces, earrings, bracelets feel free to explore.

(a)Budget and Tools
Depending on the type of jewelry you chose you need materials and tools .Let me use an example of bead jewelry since I make them, when I started out I had to do research on the materials first (make researching your best friend) in order to know how much I was likely to spend buying them, and what type of materials and tools I needed. All that helped me to budget and here are the tools and materials I use:
(a) A pair of scissors.
(b) Slip joint pliers.
(c) Maasai beads(varying sizes from the smallest size to medium size)
(d) Plastic beads of different sizes and colours.
(e) Nylon monofilament fishing line(0.40mm,0.50mm,0.70mm).
(f) Elastic line(0.7,150m,0.8,100m,0.7,100m).
(g) Hooks for earrings, necklaces and bracelets.
If you are in Nairobi Kenya this would simply cost you around 1000ksh to 3000ksh depending on the number of items you buy which is a fair price, so go for it when you’re ready.
2: THE JEWELRY MAKING PROCESS
You now have all the right materials and tools right in front of you and you don’t know where to start, and maybe you are also doubting yourself because you think since you never went to school to learn how to make jewelry you can’t be good at it.
I didn’t go to school to learn how to make jewelry i just got the idea while i was going to bed that maybe i could venture into the jewelry business, and at first i said this specific words “no i can’t” because my entire life i had never ever made jewelry or even bothered to like them.
I decided to give it a shot and it turned out i was gifted at it. Check out my instagram chartyhandmade_ke,see where i began, it was never lovely at first but as i went on i improved by learning and making more better designs.
If you also thought you need to be a good sketch artist in order to make jewelry guess what ?I can’t even draw but I make amazing pieces of bead jewelry, though you can always learn sketching later on if you want to.
I hope my story has cleared up some doubts that you had and now you can either go to Pinterest or Youtube check out some of the simple jewelry ideas and generate a unique jewelry design of your own that is simple to make.
(a) Jewelry Making Process B
You have now identified the simple design you want to make just know this ,the design may or may not appear as you want it to be and it’s okay don’t be mad its not like the public is watching or it’s an exam that you will end up failing. There is so much freedom in making jewelry it allows you to be who you want to be and make what you want to make, embrace that freedom.
Having said that take a deep breathe decide to either go with the flow of the design and see how it eventually turns out to be or pause and take a break. Sometimes when I make jewelry when stressed up they turn out to be ugly or I don’t even get halfway through the making process so being in a good state of mind is important.
The most beautiful designs that I have ever made were the ones that I went with the flow by this I mean if you found me on my desk and ask me what are you making ?I would say I don’t know.

3: MARKETING AND SELLING
At this point you have your jewelry that you have made either bracelets, necklaces or earrings. If you have decided to sell them find the right platforms to do that either physical or online platforms.
After a detailed research on marketing choose the right marketing strategies because how will people know about this amazing jewelry designer who makes the most beautiful pieces, if you do not market them? You can also enroll in marketing classes to learn more.
Selling to clients is not always a walk in the park it won’t be easy I kid you not. There will be challenges and sometimes you will even feel like giving up but I will talk more on this in my next article.
Having said all these I hope you start your jewelry making/selling journey as soon as possible see you in my next jewelry DIY articles .Thank you so much for staying till the end.
